The CapitalNurse DigitalCareer Framework tool was launched on January 17th 2018 at a prestigious event at Connaught Hotel. It has been a great project to work on because it makes full use of Axia Digital’s knowledge and expertise.

The CapitalNurse Digital Career Framework is a free-to-use digital career tool for all nurses, designed to advance a London-wide approach to career progression. It enables nurses to reflect on their practice, receive and review feedback from peers and service users and have a structured career conversation with a facilitator.

We are delighted to have been able to work on this project because we can offer our longstanding involvement in Career Development; our intimate understanding of the nursing profession and our ability to apply the latest technology to create a highly sophisticated but easy to use tool.

One of the first major projects the company developed was Learndirect Futures which helped Adults discover their skills and interests and use this information to identify career options for them. It also included a full range of tools that were designed to help individuals develop their careers. Our involvement with the Careers development has continued and we supply the online national Register of Careers Professionals.

Nursing, Midwifery and other Allied Health Professionals have always been at the heart of this company’s work. One of our first sites was the Learning Zone for the Royal College of Nursing and we now support members of Health professional bodies capture evidence of their Continuous Professional Development in the UK, Ireland and internationally. We have also converted the paper assessment documents for Undergraduate programmes at several Universities into a digital format. In terms of the technology that supports this CapitalNurse Digital Career Framework tool the company has recently been exploring the innovative ways that 360 feedback tools can be used to support Career Progression.

Chris Peat, Customer Services Director comments that ,

‘It is great to have been able to work on a project that flows from so much from the work we have been engaged in since the company’s formation over twenty years ago. We also welcome the fact that we have had the chance to work with the Capital Nurse Project which is involved in so much innovative work to support nurses in London.’

The article that appeared in the Nursing Times provides clear guidance on how to fully digitise the assessment of professional practice across a whole Health Sciences faculty. All students on the nursing, midwifery and allied health professional courses at the University of Southampton now use an e-Assessment of Professional Practice (eAoPP) tool.

If you want to know how they did it there is no better way to find out than to read the article appeared in the Nursing Times in 2015 and was written by the Project Managers, Pauline Morgan and Chloe Dyer.

The article shows that some of the potential barriers to adoption of such a system like access to computers and the internet were over stated. The site has been introduced without any need to supply computers or other devices.

The authors summarised the key success factors as follows:

Stakeholders involvement

Starting small and phased roll out

Involvement of trust practice educators

Student /staff education and dissemination

Building capacity

Just-in-time support

Responding to feedback

Collaborative working with contractor

Trialing a New Approach to Practice Assessment

The first group of students to use the new Surrey Practice Learning System have now completed their first year of practice-based learning and assessment. This system, developed in collaboration with the University of Surrey, was trialed by students on the Paramedic Science and Child Nursing programmes.

The goal was to test the effectiveness of a fully digital assessment experience for both students and their mentors. Feedback from all involved has been highly positive.

Improved Reflection and Feedback

The use of an electronic tool has encouraged students to engage more deeply with the reflective aspects of their learning. At the same time, mentors have reported that the digital format supports more focused, constructive feedback.

The Surrey trial has mirrored these outcomes, with noticeable improvements in the quality of student reflections and the clarity of mentor comments. Both students and supervisors have responded positively to the new process, finding it more efficient, accessible, and meaningful.

Expanding to More Courses Next Year

Following the success of this first year, the University of Surrey will be expanding use of the system across a broader range of programmes. In the coming academic year, students on the Midwifery and Operating Department Practice courses will join the system, alongside all other Nursing students.

This phased rollout reflects a growing confidence in the system’s ability to support professional learning and assessment in a flexible, user-friendly, and scalable way.

If you’re considering using digital tools to support practice-based learning in your own organisation, we’d be happy to discuss how our systems can be tailored to your needs. Get in touch today.

Why It’s Time to Rethink Paper-Based Assessment

In many sectors (particularly healthcare, education, and training) portfolio-based assessment remains a crucial part of tracking competence and progression. Traditionally, this involved large amounts of paperwork, time-consuming printing, manual verification, and significant time investment. But there’s a more efficient solution.

At Axia, we specialise in building e-portfolio and assessment systems that not only improve the experience for students and assessors, but also save a significant amount of money.

The Cost of Paper-Based Systems

Let’s say you’re managing a three-year programme with around 400 students per year. Here’s what the numbers look like:

One-off printing costs: £20 per portfolio x 400 students = £8,000 annually

Photocopying and filing: 150,000 sheets per cohort, with 72,000 needing manual filing = £10,000

Verification process: 1,200 students each submit work twice a year. At 4 portfolios per hour, verifying 2,400 submissions takes 600 academic hours, which is 16 weeks of staff time, costing around £20,000

That adds up to £46,000 per year, or a massive £138,000 over three years.

And that doesn’t include hidden costs like admin time, misplaced documents, or the environmental impact of hundreds of thousands of printed sheets.

The Digital Alternative

Now compare that with an electronic portfolio and verification system:

One-off build cost: £30,000

Annual maintenance and support costs: £8,000

Verification process: Online group verification takes just 2 hours per 20 students. All 2,400 submissions can be verified in 240 hours, which is 6.5 weeks of work, saving both time and academic resource. Estimated cost: £8,000

Over three years, the total cost of the digital system is £54,000 – less than half the cost of the paper-based system.

The Outcomes That Matter

Switching to a digital portfolio solution doesn’t just cut costs, it delivers meaningful improvements:

Faster verification cycles mean quicker feedback for learners and better student outcomes.

No paper handling or storage, saving admin time and freeing up physical space.

Real-time data access for educators and supervisors.

Scalability across cohorts, departments, or institutions.

And importantly, digital systems make compliance, audits, and reporting easier and more transparent.

Want to Learn More?

A purpose-built digital system costs less, does more, and supports better learning and assessment. At Axia, we develop custom digital solutions that are built around the specific needs of each organisation, whether that’s a university department, a professional body, or a specialist training provider. Our systems are flexible, scalable, and fully tailored, ensuring that they integrate seamlessly with existing processes and evolve as your needs change.

Curious how a digital system like this could streamline your work and cut costs? Get in touch today.

Meeting the Evolving Needs of Professional Training

At Axia, we build custom e-portfolio systems that empower educators, students, and supervisors across healthcare and social care training. Our work with pre-qualification Nursing, Midwifery, Allied Health, and Care Professional courses continues to expand, both in terms of disciplines and the institutions we support.

What began as a collaboration with the Universities of Southampton and Bournemouth, supporting nursing and midwifery programmes, has since grown significantly. Today, our e-portfolio systems are being used across a wider range of professions, including:

Occupational Therapy

Physiotherapy

Podiatry

Social Work

Most recently, we’ve partnered with the University of Surrey to support paramedic training, developing new functionality to meet the specific needs of this dynamic and mobile workforce.

Designed for Real-World Practice

Paramedics often complete assessments in unpredictable environments, sometimes with a student and supervisor sharing a single device in the back of an ambulance. To support this, we developed a dual-view interface that allows both parties to access the portfolio securely and seamlessly. With a simple PIN entry, the screen switches from the student’s view to the practice educator’s dashboard, making it easy to record and verify learning moments on the spot.

Scalable, Secure, and Student-Centered

With more than 15,000 users across universities, placement sites, and professional disciplines, our e-portfolio solutions are built to scale. Each system is tailored to the needs of the institution and the profession it supports, offering flexibility without compromising on usability, compliance, or data security.

Our aim is to make assessment and supervision easier, more accurate, and more accessible for everyone involved. Want to see how a tailored e-portfolio system could work for your programme? Get in touch today.
