MyCAD for MTU Nursing Courses
Established in 2021 through the merger of Cork Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee, Munster Technological University (MTU) serves over 18,000 students across six campuses in Cork and Kerry.
MTU’s Department of Nursing and Healthcare Sciences sought to modernise the assessment process for its nursing programs. Traditionally, nursing students’ competencies were assessed using paper-based National Competency Assessment Documents (NCADs). This method posed challenges in terms of accessibility, tracking, and administrative efficiency. MTU aimed to transition to a digital solution which would streamline the assessment process while maintaining familiarity for both students and assessors.
Implementing MyCAD
In collaboration with Axia Digital, MTU piloted MyCAD—the first digital version of the NCAD, initially developed for Atlantic Technological University (ATU). The pilot began in March 2024 with first-year nursing students. Due to its success, it was then expanded to include third-year students within two weeks.
MyCAD mirrors the structure and content of the traditional paper NCAD, ensuring a seamless transition for users without the need for extensive training. The platform allows for real-time tracking of student progress, facilitates assessments in both hospital and community settings, and enhances communication between students and preceptors.

Outcomes and Impact
The implementation of MyCAD at MTU has led to:
- Increased efficiency: streamlined assessment processes and reduced administrative burdens.
- Improved accessibility: easy access to assessment documents for students and preceptors across various locations.
- Enhanced user experience: familiar interface minimised the learning curve, encouraging adoption among users.
MTU’s successful adoption of MyCAD reflects its commitment to embracing digital transformation in education, aligning with national priorities set by the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD), Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), and Health Service Executive (HSE).
